Mad Hatter Inspired Glam Makeup Tutorial

We probably all know, and love, the crazy charactar from Alice in Wonderland: the Mad Hatter. In the live-action movies his character design is amazing. The details of his outfit and makeup are downright beautiful and it fits the character so well. I always wanted to do my makeup like this version of Hatter, but I never got around to do it and I kind of forgot about it. Until this week, when I watched Glam&Gore’s latest YouTube video in which she tries to do Mad Hatter sfx makeup in thirty minutes. It really brought back the idea of dressing up as Hatter, but then put my own twist to it. So today I bring you: Mad Hatter, but call it glam!

As you might know, Hatter’s makeup colour scheme is all over the place, so it’s quite hard to make it an actual glam look. I tried my best to make it as glam as possible, but I don’t think I’ll ever wear this to a party. Unless it’s a glam Disney party, ofcourse.

For makeup reference I used the picture above. The main focus point for me was the use of four different eyeshadow colours and white mascara. So those were the things I wanted to incorporate into the look. I’ll talk my way through all the steps I took, naming all the products I used. At the end of the article there’ll be a small list of the used products as well. Let’s get started!

I started of with my usual base: Catrice Allround Coverstick in 010 Nude for the biggest concealing parts and NYC Smooth Skin Liquid Concealer in Light for the smaller parts and a bit of highlighting. On top of that I used my all time favourite: Essence All About Matt! Fixing Compact Powder. I’ve used this one for a couple of years now and I’m on my third one.

The first ‘drastic’ thing I did was do my eyebrows. It’s quite obvious that Hatter has bright orange hair and matching brows, so I thought it’d be fun to make my eyebrows orange. Why not, right? I started with Max&More EyeBrow Pencil in 202 Brown as a base and on top of that I used the colours Rusted and 518 of the James Charles x Morphe palette. After that I cleaned up my brows using my NYC concealer again.

Now onto the eyes. Hatter has blue on his left eye, so that’s what I did too. All colours used are from the James Charles x Morphe palette. I started with blending Playground in my crease and then deepening the crease using Cola. To give it a bit of a pop I put Hello on the inner corner of the lid, blending it with cola in the middle.

For the right eye I used the same method, but then in purple. Again all colours are from the James Charles x Morphe palette. I blended Single in my crease and deepened the crease and outer V using Escape. I put Artistry on the inner corner of the lid and blended it with Escape in the middle.

On the purple side of the face I put a bright pink shade on the lower lash line, and on the blue side a bright red shade. These are, respectively, Skip and You’re Kidding of the James Charles palette.

Since I don’t have white mascara and I wanted to do a bit more of a glam take on the look, I decided to wear white eyeliner. I made a basic wing using Essence Eyeliner Pen Longlasting in 02 White for this and I used a white waterbased face paint on top of this to make the colour as opaque as possible. I did this on both eyes.

To finish this look I put Essence Kajal Pencil in 04 White on my lower lash line and I put on L’oréal Paris Megavolume Collagene 24 Mascara in Extra Black. I really suck at putting on fake lashes, so I didn’t, even though I love the look of them. So feel free to do so if you like wearing them. I used Max&More Bronzing Powder Matt in 150 LA Heat to contour my cheeks and nose and Catrice High Glow Mineral Highlighting Powder in 010 Light Infusion to highlight my cheekbones, nose, inner eye corner and browbone. I finished the entire look by putting on Essence Longlasting Lipstick in 07 Natural Beauty, which is a lovely soft pink colour.

And with that the look is finished! I know it isn’t completely ‘glam’, but I think that’s due to the crazy colour palette. It’s very easy to look weird when you’re wearing all different colours. I do like how it turned out, and I had fun creating it. It was just an idea that came to me at once and I decided I needed to try it out immediately. And it worked out fine, if I say so myself.
