Since this January my boyfriend and I have a movie subscription. This means we pay a certain price every month to visit as much movies in the theaters as we want. This also means that I have watched quite a lot of new movies recently. Today I’ll tell you a bit about the movies I watched in the past weeks and what I think about them. Keep on reading if ya like!
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019) – On Netflix
I watched this movie about two hours before I started writing this article. I really wanted to include this in this post, so I had to watch it today. This movie is about Ted Bundy during the time of his trials. It shows the story through the eyes of his girlfriend(s). I heard some people say it is a romanticized version of the story, which I do agree with a tiny bit. But the way this story is portrayed is exactly how a woman would view Bundy. You start to sympathize with this charming man, while you know you shouldn’t. This is exactly how he was as a person, always capable of making people, but especially women, trust him. The courtroom scenes are very well acted and they are portrayed almost exactly like the original trials. I really ‘enjoyed’ watching this movie, since it is of course not an enjoyable story, but the actors were great and the story was portrayed in a very impressive way. While this movie is a bit more of a drama, showing Bundy’s live around the murders and not focussing on the murders themselves, just the aftermath, I really recommend watching this if you are interested in true crime stories.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
I went into this movie with the idea I was just going to see a fun lil’ movie with a lot of nostalgia, but not that much meaning. I was partially right. This movie gave me all the nostalgia I could ask for, making the dream world where pokémon live all around you seem real. But besides all the wuzzy childhood feelings, this movie actually has a pretty substantial plot. There is quite a deep background story going on, with a lot of secrets being revealed along the story. You are figuring the story out while you’re watching it. Everybody expected this to be a movie for kids. After watching it, I couldn’t disagree more. I really, really enjoyed watching this movie. I was completely invested in the story during the full two hours. I laughed a bit, and spent a lot of time investigating stuff with Pikachu. It was a lot of fun and I’m glad I watched this movie. It definitely exceeded my expectations. Fun little bonus: we even received Pokémon cards that were designed for the movies. For the real Pokémon lover, this movie is definitely worth the watch.
I must say, I have not yet watched any of the old Hellboy movies. However, my father was very enthusiastic about them, just like almost every other person. Since this movie is some kind of reboot, without the original actors and director, I wasn’t expecting much of it. And I was pretty right to do so. The storyline was a bit inconsistent, with a lot of backstory thrown into it, which makes it hard to understand. There were a lot of scenes which were just unnecessary additions. I feel like they knew this was not exactly right and tried to make up for it with liters of blood and multiple cut off limbs. I now understand why the movie was 16+. The story in itself was fun and enjoyable, I don’t feel like I wasted two hours of my time, but the execution was just a bit poor. I have one thing going for me now: I haven’t seen the older movies yet, so it can only go up from here.
The Perfect Date (2019) – On Netflix
I have quite a bit of spare time on my hands lately, so I spend a lot of time browsing Netflix. When this movie was just uploaded I saw trailer after trailer passing by on Instagram and Netflix itself. So I decided: why not. Sometimes I like a cheesy movie. Well. This one was definitely cheesy. And that’s about it. It’s the generic story of: guy wants hot girl, normal girl helps him, hot girl rejects him, he goes for the normal girl. Nothing special about this. The one thing that I liked was the gay sidecharacter with his date. Oh, and Laura Marano, because she’s cute. In conclusion: just a simple, boring teenage love story that they tried to give a twist to, but it didn’t really pay off as much as they wanted. Oh, and Noah Centineo of course. Just his face gained them enough views, I believe. If you’re into things like this, watch it. If you’re not: don’t even bother, because you will feel like you’ve wasted your time.
I feel like today’s reviews went downwards while we went along. We started on a good note, and ended on a not so good one. Oh well, I was just being honest. Some of the movies were good though! Since I watch a lot of movies in the theaters now, I thought it would be fun to write reviews like this more often. A bit like a “movies I’ve watched in the past month” kind of thing. Let me know what you think of that. I really enjoyed writing these, so I hope you enjoyed reading them as well!
