Review: Essence ‘From Santa with Love’ Christmas Trend Edition Palette and Highlighter

When I saw pictures of Essence’s new Christmas trend edition floating around the interwebs, I just knew I had to get me some of it. The packaging was just adorable, and the eyeshadow palette had some beautiful shades in it. So last week I hauled my butt over to the drugstore to buy the From Santa With Love Eyeshadow Palette and Highlighter. And here I am, reviewing parts of this beautiful collection! If you want to know all the ins and outs of these products, keep on reading!

So, I managed to get the highlighter and the eyeshadow palette from the christmas collection. There were a few other products, but those were mostly accessories to this collection, like some brushes, lashes and nail stickers. That’s why I decided to just get the two beauty products. Let’s start with the Face & Body Highlighter. The packaging on this thing is just adorable. It’s just like any other Essence pressed powder packaging, but the gold decorations on it make it seem so festive and Christmas-y. And the standard packaging is very nice to use. It feels sturdy and not too cheap, and it’s easy to see what product you’re grabbing.

The highlighter is a very sparkly, white highlighter. Very sparkly. I’ve never seen this many glitters in a highlighter! Perfect for the holidays, if you ask me.

And then the swatch. I have a few things to say about this highlighter. The swatch is mostly just white sparkles and glitters. There isn’t really a shimmery powder or anything, so this highlighter doesn’t give an intense shine. It just gives a subtle sparkle/shimmer. It is a bit buildable, but it doesn’t give the effect of an intense highlighter. If you’re into more subtle things like that, this highlighter is perfect. And I do think the white sparkle is cute for the holidays. I just wouldn’t use this in a holiday look. For the holidays I want to look all glam, so I’m looking for a little bit less natural highlighter. For me, this highlighter is better to use on school days. Just for that subtle, healthy glow. Besides that, it is really nice to use and the subtle glow it gives is very beautiful.

Then onto the highlight of this entire collection: the eyeshadow palette! The packaging on this palette is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. It looks and opens like an envelope, and it even has a Christmas mail stamp on it. The gold with the white looks cute and it fits the Christmas theme so well. I love everything about this!

The colour story is actually not what you would expect of a Christmas palette, but I love it. You would maybe expect some red shades, some golds, maybe some silvers. But an entire pink palette is not what I would necessarily associate with Christmas. However, because of all the sparkle shades, and how well the pink looks with the gold, it does give me Christmas vibes. And I was looking for a palette with more pink colours, so this was a great addition to my collection.

About the shades themselves: there are six matte shades, four shimmers/metallics and two pressed glitters. I was really excited about these pressed glitters, because I didn’t have pressed glitters before this palette. I feel like those glitters also make this palette a lot more festive. The division of mattes, shimmers and glitters makes for a very versatile palette. And it gives the opportunity for some very creative looks.

Let’s discuss these swatches a bit. I know pressed glitters don’t swatch well, because they tend to stick to your fingers, but I wanted to include them anyway. When you use a pressed glitter on your eyes, lay on some eye primer or concealer first and apply the glitters with a flat brush. That’s the best way to apply them. The matte shades on the first row did feel a bit chalky, but all the other shades feel great. Most swatches give off great pigment, especially for such a budget brand. They are nice to work with, but they do give some fall out, so watch out for that.

One thing that I don’t like about this palette, is that the shades don’t have names. I know that not all budget brands do this, but since Essence does have a few palettes with actual shade names, I’m a bit dissappointed that their special Christmas collection doesn’t have shade names. But that’s about the only thing I don’t like. The aesthetic of this palette is everything and the colour story is great for some glam Christmas looks. For the price, the shades have great quality and are easy to work with. Of course there’s always some room for improvement, but I tend to not be so tough on budget brands, since they do have a low budget to work, and I’m just happy to be able to get quality makeup for a low price.

All in all, this collection does not disappoint. The highlighter is great, however I would not use it for Christmas parties, but as an everyday highlighter. The palette is also great, because it makes for great glam looks for the holidays, but it isn’t limited to the holidays. You could use these colours all year round. And the packaging is the most adorable thing ever. I can’t wait to use these products this Christmas. I want to thank you for reading, and I’ll see you next time!

The Essence ‘From Santa with Love’ Trend edition Eyeshadow palette is available for €8,99 and the Highlighter is available for €3,99 at multiple drugstores and online.
